Tue, 26 Dec 2017 22:30:47 +000037th annual Governor's Challenge impacts Salisbury's economy37th annual Governor's Challenge impacts Salisbury's economyhttp://chic.clipsyndicate.com/video/playlist/12487/7219387?cpt=8&wpid=2637WMDTamerica has descended on delmarva. the govenor's challenge brings in over 100 boys and girls teams annually for the five day tournament. but as 47 abc's taylor lumpkin reports - the biggest impact may be felt off the court. players practicing track 1 from the courts-- cooks preparing sandwiches to the restaurants hotel lobby to the hotels-- --businesses all around salisbury are preparing for the thousands of local and out-of-state people that are making their way to the area for the 37th annual governors challenge usually it's over 10,000 attendees that actually are here watching the event. it's pretty crazy to see the number of people coming in from out of town track 2 the annual holiday tournament is a tradition on the shore - showcasing some of the best high school boys and girls teams in the nation. players playing but it's also a chance for local businesses to cash in. that's a 1.5 million dollar economic impact on the area with hotels, restaurants, shopping all of that combined starting tuesday night phones will be ringing off the hook to feed hundreds of basketball players and staff which will bring a surge in business to local restaurants like sub runners the impact for us is after the initial order a lot of times they'll order the second night or third night so it is a good help to our business as well track 4 local hotels also get more traffic. thehampton inn in salisubury hosts teams for the challenge--and say when one team leaves-- another team is getting ready to check in. there's over 800 rooms booked just alone from the teams across the county. there's 9 or 10 different hotels that we've partnered with from wicomico county tourism track 5 businesses add that the community should continue to support the tournament and take advantage of every opportunity to grow salisbury.taylor lumpkin 47 abc. the tournament will be going on from now until the 30th and will include fan favorites like the 3 point skills challenge and a dunk contest. tickets for daily admission into the governor's challenge are $10. of course later on we'll be sending you over live as tray and geoff kick off our coverage of the tournament.
