While many of us may think that we are in total control of our actions and that our decisions are made consciously, it appears the unconscious mind is having a pretty huge influence in our day to day dealings in the world. 2U Ltd say a series of experiments recently conducted for the BBC documentary Horizon demonstrated that the unconscious mind is not only far more vast than the conscious, but this unseen presence continually influences the decision-making process and every emotion we experience or move we make.
Traditionally the unconscious or subconscious has been associated with our deepest desires and dreams and was thought to be subordinate to the conscious. In fact, it has had some pretty poor press historically, seen as a primal, unpredictable entity that should be feared or repressed rather than embraced and utilised. But in truth the unconscious is running the show, employing strategies to guide us through life and keep us safe.
Harnessing its power and potential could lead human beings to increased success and with the aid of the many mobile learning tools and brain training apps on offer today who knows how rapid the transformation could be. Professor Paul Sajda from Columbia University told the BBC If you think that the internet, networking and Facebook have caused a revolution wait to see what happens when we really understand the human brain.
The documentary revealed that the conscious mind can only cope with two to three tasks at once and as the eye moves approximately five times a second, the amount of information most people can take in consciously is limited. The unconscious seems to be filling in and filtering the rest. For example, the programme recorded an experiment where three participants had portable video cameras strapped to their heads and were asked to follow an electronic toy helicopter and catch it. Each employed their own individual strategy. One used positioning, another used speed and focus and the other, angles. The digital cameras tracked movements from the participants point of view and the footage was then fed into computers for analysis.
The final results showed that despite each person employing a different strategy and positioning themselves differently, each had actually followed the helicopter in a straight line. The unconscious, which is hardwired as a hunter, continually readjusted their positions and decisions so the toy appeared to fly on a straight path but the participants were not conscious of this happening.
The unconscious part of the brain is not only more sophisticated than previously thought but more extensive too. Several scientists and neurologists were given a blank A3 sheet of paper (representing the brain) and a marker and asked to indicate how much of the area, in their opinion, was conscious. Estimates ranged from a 1cm square to approximately 1/12th of the space or a mere corner. Other experiments showed how the unconscious will resort to sometimes underhand tactics, occasionally ignoring negative information. Apparently it does this so we stay positive and motivated enough to survive and explore despite any worries of future illness, theft, accidents or debt etc that we may harbour. Scientists believe this ability to turn a blind eye to risks is essential to our development as a species.
But what if a persons subconscious is full of stuff that is impacting negatively, how can it be changed to really start working favourably? There are several techniques that are believed to help harness the seemingly unlimited power of the unconscious and a host of e-books, CDs and apps for iPhones, smartphones and iPads that utilize these methods for brain training and brain control. Here are a few techniques and tools:
Visualisation One of the main techniques in brain-training is the power of the imagination to visualise the life or outcomes one desires. Practicing visualisation and continually repeating the desired outcomes using imagery to a point where a person literally feels they are experiencing it for real can trick and reshape the unconscious mind to believe it as truth and motivate the person to take steps to make it happen for real.
Relaxation and Meditation Einstein believed the power of the unconscious is easier to tap into and unleash when a person is in a totally relaxed state. When the genius needed an answer to a problem he would sit with a stone or metal object in his hand. As he entered a relaxed, sleepy dream state which would contain the intuitive answer to the problem, the object would fall waking him so he could instantly remember the solution he had dreamt.
Checking and Transforming Self Image Brain training techniques are only successful it seems if they are in line with a persons self image. For instance, a person may want to be financially rich but if deep down in the unconscious mind their self image is poor and they do not truly believe they deserve to be wealthy then results will be poor - a self-fulfilling prophecy. Visualising ones self as one wants to be or in the circumstances that one desires and feeling it can improve self-image along with affirmations and autosuggestion.
