State of the State Address By Clip Syndicate The State of the State Address took place this evening with Governor Phil Bryant touting accomplishments of unemployment, mental health, and health insurance in Mississippi. Governor Phil Bryant delivered his seventh State of the State address, jumping right into praising accomplishments in education and unemployment rates in Mississippi. “Twice last year, the unemployment rate in Mississippi fell to 4.9 percent and was 4.8 percent in November. That is the lowest since unemployment levels began to be recorded in 1979.” Stating that before the state had Mississippians searching for jobs and now we have jobs searching for Mississippians. “Today, we have more than 40,000 jobs looking for people.We have added more than 60,000 jobs and billions of dollars of foreign and domestic investment in Mississippi industry,” said Governor Bryant. Another concern in Mississippi is the overall issue of the opioid epidemic. “In December 2016, I issued an executive order creating the Governor’s Opioid and Heroin Task Force to address this problem,” said Governor Bryant, “Law enforcement, physicians, pharmacists, and mental health professionals came together and began to attack these killers that have taken the lives of over two hundred Mississippians just in the last 12 months.” Following the State of the State, comments from the Democratic side. With Representative Jay Hughes stating that Mississippi is still last in education and mental health, adding that our leaders must quit pretending that mental health is a choice and needs to be treated for what they are."Those in need end up in our jails and prisons instead of getting help, a nice start would be paying those workers above minimum wage and increasing community program involvement with mental health treatment.” What was not mention in this year’s address that lawmakers were hoping for was talk of potential state lottery. ...Read More »
