"wonderful day and night downtown. everybody enjoy. thank you so much for coming" mary kate: the downtown business association hosted the shop small business saturday event for the fifth year -- encouraging the community to keep it local. melanie: "you need to support your local businesses, shop local a lot of the smaller businesses they don't have the funds available for the overhead that we have" andrae: "they are the ones who've sacrificed so much energy, time and money to make their businesses thrive and all of them cumulatively have a major impact on downtown" mary kate: the day started with brunch at the padre hotel, where norma hernandez and her sister and niece enjoyed a nice meal before hitting the streets of downtown bakersfield. norma: "we just want to give back to the community have some little fun while we are doing it" mary kate: like hernandez, cher pannell and her friend shopped small to show their support -- big. "if we don't support the businesses in bakersfield we wont have them and we cant do everything online. it's not as fun. you get to go to breakfast with your friend and it just gets out and begins the christmas spirit." mary kate: santa and mrs. claus even came out today, taking pictures with all the little boys and girls on the nice list. local flower shop house of flowers is celebrating its 10th anniversry this year. co-owner amanda klawitter says without the community's support they couldn't have been successful. amanda: "it's really important for people to support local because wonderful things kind of grow out of that. you're getting something that isn't the typical franchise or corporate store. you're getting kind of an experience that isn't offered here in bakersfield and i think that's why it's really important to support local business." mary kate: now that holiday shopping is officially underway, the dba encourages you to shop local for those gifts to put under the christmas tree. the money you spend at local businesses, stays right here in kern county. again, the massive tree here at the centennial plaza will be lit up in less than 30 minutes. live in downtown, mary kate paquette, 17 news.
