http://chic.clipsyndicate.com/video/playlist/12499/7132565?cpt=8&wpid=2637 Tue, 17 Oct 2017 03:05:08 +0000 Half-Cent Sales Tax Road Work Half-Cent Sales Tax Road Work http://chic.clipsyndicate.com/video/playlist/12499/7132565?cpt=8&wpid=2637 WMBB it's been almost a year since bay county voters approved a half cent sales tax for infrastruc ture improvements. the majority of that money is earmarked for transporta tion improvements. as news 13's kirsten mitchell tells us, people are already seeing some evidence of the tax money at work.. nats cars drivers may already see some of the dozens of road projects underway, funded by half-cent sales tax money. tax supporters sold it to voters, emphasizing tourists would help pay the cost. monday members of the tax's citizen oversight committee said revenue is stacking up. doug moore, chairman of the citizens oversight committee "we probably had a good tourist season so tourists were able to help us pay for some of the infrastructure improvements we are going to be seeing." the latest project county commissioners approved is a bit historic.....pav ing bertha nelson road from u-s 231 to titus road south. keith bryant, public works director "it's pretty exciting because it's the first dirt road we've paved using surtax funds." the east avenue bridge is another priority project, since the department of transporta tion gave it a low score on it's last inspection. keith bryant, bay county public works director "100 is the best, this one is currently 13.7 i believe which is pretty low." kirsten mitchell, stand up "the bridge is well over 50 years old and with the panama city mill and the port right here it's important that it's strong enough to hold heavy vehicles." the county is partnering with the department of transporta tion, the port and city of panama city. keith bryant, bay county public works director "the dot is paying 75% of the design costs and the locals being the port, the city, the county, are paying 25%." he says partnerships like this help the county spread more tax money around to other projects, like thomas drive where crews will bury utilities and resurface. in bay county, kirsten mitchell news 13. the county didn't begin collecting the tax until march, so they haven't even had the benefit of a
